I am not a fan of reality shows, but I am a fan of books written by Brandilyn Collins, so I absolutely had to buy a copy of Vain Empires. Collins is a brilliant novelist who always impresses me with her ability to create a spellbinding tale filled with hidden layers and complex characters. As captivating as the story is from a suspense angle, the portrayal of human nature and behavior is even more compelling as the characters endeavor to protect their own secrets while attempting to identify each of the other contestants' Deadly Sin. I am a pretty astute reader but I was caught completely off guard by the twist at the end. A great book to read, reread, ponder, and discuss, Vain Empires belongs at the top of your summer TBR list! Don't miss it!

Vain Empires Brandilyn Collins 9780692723111 Books Reviews

Collins is a master of psyche exploration- albeit in stories that can lean too far towards Stephen King-creepy. This one had an intriguing premise, altho Angela Hunt had already used the exotic-location mysterious-game show plot already. The story and character development was okay, but it ended all too abruptly and without much satisfaction. The packing up and hiding all traces was a big fizzle.
Since some were actually guilty of crimes, perhaps the Epilogue could have included the "what happened next" device used in movies.
I have spent hours reading Brandilyn Collins and she is at the top of my favorite writers...but I just could not enjoy this read. It is different, I love a good mystery. Clean read, and especially a happy ending. Vain Empires was just not my kind of book.
Vain Empires is definitely a different kind of Brandilyn Collins read but I welcomed it's mystery, suspense, and subtle, yet powerful message. And the twists and turns truly kept me on the edge of my seat. I'm so glad that I began reading it while on a trip. I didn't even mind when my plane was announced to be taking off two hours late. I was actually glad because I knew it would be a lot harder to find the time to read it once I returned home. I think Vain Empires communicates in a powerful way the motives in our hearts. It's like a parable that we're offered an opportunity to examine ourselves. I actually found it to have a very spiritual impact on my heart. Thank you, Ms. Collins!
Collins jump on the reality television band wagon with this novel, but instead of hunting for someone you love, the story focuses on the vain pursuits of each individual. The story moved at a rapid pace, and I really stayed engrossed in the tale. I got involved in each individual character's plight, praying they would solve the mystery. I really didn't see who the person who was behind the story or the reason why until he explained himself. As for the ending, it left me wanting more. I got to the final chapter, and I was like really. That is all! Not a really satisfying conclusion for what Collins led me to believe would happen. Maybe because most reality shows leave you feeling the same way. In conclusion, if you are a fan of reality game shows, this might be the perfect book for you. As for me, not so much.
I have long been a fan of Brandilyn Collins. The past few novels she has written became predictable for me, though they were still very enjoyable. This one, however, was not (predictable, that is. Still VERY enjoyable). This was a different style than she typically writes in that there were 5 main characters and the chapters came from the viewpoint of a different character and built on each other. I really enjoyed the style and flow of this and was well written in her typical fashion. Best of all, I was surprised by the ending. I read this one in pretty much one sitting - I just couldn't put it down! Highly recommend!
Brandilyn Collins did not disappoint with her latest book, Vain Empires. I read it straight through and then did something I've never done beforw--the next day I read it again, to see if I had missed clues the first time through. I liked the premise of the plot and thought it was interesting that none of the characters assigned themselves a vice. Character development was excellent, always a strong talent with Brandilyn. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy intrigue in their Christian fiction.
This story was fresh and unique. Brandilyn is known for her "seatbelt suspense,"and this was no exception. This was more psychological I thought than anything else and I don't want to say much for fear of giving anything away! This story is told from many different viewpoints but it works. Contestant winners are on their way to an undisclosed island for 3 days, and at the end there will be one winner. This story really paints a sad and vivid picture of human behavior that isn't too far off. Read this one and you'll understand what I mean. Great job Brandilyn, I was guessing up to the end! )
